Hot Comic Book Releases: 6/24/15

Alright, True Believers, another week, another gaggle of greatness for your reading pleasure in this week’s edition of Hot Comic Book Releases! DC Comics are burning up with the appearance of Robo-Batman and Superman’s loss of power. Marvel is in the thick of Battleworld and still rolling out great tie-ins. But like the sweetest apples plucked directly from the tree, the best of the best are my Fresh Picks.

Fresh Picks:

  • Archie Comics is releasing Sonic Universe #77 this week. It’s part 5 of the 12-part Worlds Unite crossover event and Sigma has joined the worlds of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man and it’s going to take heroes and villains to take down Sigma and make thesonicU77 worlds right again.
  • Boom! Studios is starting a new story arc in Adventure Time #41 where Peppermint Butler recruits Finn and Jake to become part of his secret agency so the dudes join to figure out why he’s so mysterious.
  • DC Comics is dropping a new book that looks very intriguing. Hundreds of teenagers from all around Gotham City are adopting the moniker of Robin in We Are Robin #1. The idea of a legion of crime-fighting kids using the ‘R’ identity has some potential to be a very interesting story.
  • Marvel Comics is starting to build Ant-Man hype to go alongside the upcoming Ant-Man movie. This week they are releasing a couple of Ant-Man trade paperbacks as well as a hardcover and Ant-Man Larger Than Life #1 where Hank Pym has to take down one of his own experiments and includes reprints of Tales to Astonish #27 (1st appearance of Hank Pym) and Tales to Astonish #35 (1st appearance of Ant-Man in costume).
  • Finally, our weekly Secret Wars tie-in round-up includes Age of Ultron vs Marvel Zombies #1, E is for Extinction #1, Infinity Gauntlet #2, Korvac Saga #1, MODOK Assassin #2, Planet Hulk #2, Where Monsters Dwell #2, and X-Men ’92 #1. So many Secret Wars tie-ins and they’re not even done yet.
Another new #1 is coming out this week courtesy of DC Comics. Justice League 3001 takes a look at the World’s Greatest Heroes in *Arnold Schwarzenegger voice* DA FUTCHA!! That got me wondering, what will comic books be like in the year 3001? So here’s where I think comic books will be in a thousand years.
1. Augmented Reality Comics. The future of comics will be so immersive that they will be downloaded and projected in the room around you so you can see the action playing out as you read/watch your favorite heroes saving the world. It even has a super-cool acronym built right in. I imagine each ARC will probably cost $100, making your pull list rack up thousands of bucks a month, but who needs to eat real jl3001food? You can eat virtual cimichangas with Deadpool!
2. Crossover Events. With the current popularity of crossover events in comic books in 2015 growing, by the time 3001 gets here, crossover events will be permanent. 300 different tie-ins from each company coming out every week, retconning themselves constantly. Who needs continuity when you can shock the readers by killing Superman for the 453rd time?! It’s okay, Flash will just run backwards really fast on his treadmill and save the day until he dies again next week.
3. Movies and TV. Super Hero movies will have gotten so popular that a new one is released every Friday from a different company. Personally, I can’t wait for The Amazing Uncanny Superior Tangled Web of Your Friendly Neighborhood Sensational Spider-Man 246 to hit theatres. The small screen will be similar, with the popularity of comic book TV shows creating such a high content demand that comic book companies will just have their own networks. “Coming up next on the 1990’s Image Comics Channel: Inhumanly Large Muscles, followed by How Many Utility Pouches Is Enough?” Quality television.
4. Conventions. Comic book conventions will have gotten so popular that instead of holding them in one place each year, they will travel the country every weekend like the circus or those gun shows. Flying trucks packed with all the conventions’ gear will zip from city to city every weekend so rabid fans will have somewhere to go to show off their cosplay cloaking devices. However, they will still have not figured out how to eliminate standing in line for hours.
5. Stan Lee. He will still be alive. He will still be going to every comic book convention in the nation. He will still be showing up in every Marvel movie. He will still be the man! Excelsior!
And THAT is the future of comic books! Leave a comment below with your pull list this week. If you don’t know where your nearest local comic book store is, check out the Comic Shop Locator.
