Hello and welcome! This is the Geeks Under Grace daily devotional where we dive into the Bible everyday. We take devotionals from bible.com and read the verses, devotional, and give our own commentary. Sometimes we will have multiple writers, but most of the time it will be just me. I hope you enjoy and comment with your own commentary.
This devotional is titled “Find Purpose In Your Work”. It is only 3 days long. I use the ESV bible but feel free to use the version of your choosing.
1 Samuel 3:7
“Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.”
“making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ”
God’s plan centers on relationship. We discover His plan for us in relationship with Him. But where do we start?
The prophet Samuel gives us a great example in 1 Samuel chapter 3. The first times God tried to speak to Samuel, he didn’t recognize God’s voice. He grew over time in how he listened to God. But later, Samuel learned to hear God speak. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And Samuel heard God’s voice.
Take a moment and try listening to God on how He has uniquely gifted you. This two minute audio prayer provides a time of structured reflection, with scripture and pauses, for you to listen to God’s word and voice. You can also select different types of worshipful music during the prayer time. Listen to God in prayer on this question: how is God using your gifts to touch others?
In 1 Samuel 3:7 (in context) tells you that Samuel knew of the Lord, however he did not have a personal relationship with him.
God knows everything. Yes, I know. What a shocker. However, God knows exactly what you need to know and when you need to know it to keep you on the right track for His plan for you. From the many people, including myself, who know what God’s plan is for them, end up having things revealed to them over time. Not everything is told at once and chances are when He tells you what your purpose is then it will make you wonder how that will happen or why He chose you for that. In my case I was burned out in the Navy with no real purpose it felt like. God revealed to me when I was 22 what my purpose was. No details were given at the time, but I knew what my purpose was. Some of you may be in dead end jobs where you feel like you have nothing you can do for God there. You may be surprised that God can use you in any situation. He does not need the perfect conditions to use you for Him. Now what is His overall plan for your life? That is between you and Him. Trust Him, live for Him, pray, be in the Word everyday and it will be revealed to you. Heck, maybe it has been revealed to you and you have been rejecting it. You never know, but God does.
