Great article Shawn. It’s so true that we need to have more inter church work. That being said, I can’t do ministry with a clear conscience with a sect of Christendom that I feel is openly sinning with their doctrine and practice. This article makes me want to grow the connections with the Christians that I come in contact with who I disagree with on some things. I think there are primary, secondary and tertiary doctrines. Primary is directly from scripture like God is sovereign. Secondary is stuff that is not expressly written in scripture but inferred from it like the doctrine of the trinity. Tertiary things are doctrines based on secondary doctrines like the 5 points of Calvinism, different modes of baptism, or some end times eschatology. I think that I can minister with someone who aligns with me on at least primary and secondary doctrines, but maybe disagrees with me on tertiary doctrine. I am humbled by how God’s plan included me and I need to see the worth in other Christians because of what Christ has done in their lives too.
Thanks for reading, John, and I’m glad the article had a positive impact on you!
I agree that some groups claim Christianity and don’t hold views in alignment with Scripture. We are to judge others with discernment (1 John 4:1) to make sure that they are growing in the right direction. We also know that some will harden their hearts to the truth in favor of false teachings, so we have to be able to judge that in others. My hope is that everyone would seek Scripture first, because I truly believe God carried down the most important pieces to us through the Bible. If everyone were to do that, these sects that we are talking about would die off, and we would all be able to work together fully. All we can do in the time being, is to be open to have conversations with other believers, look to Scripture for Truth, and help each other seek God earnestly.
God bless your ministry, John!
Good on ya Shawn. We definitely need to work together within the body. That being said, I can’t be in communion with someone who I feel is openly condoning sin. I think that some sects of Christendom do that and I can’t work with them. Them excluded, there are millions of people that I would have no problem ministering with. This article makes me want to work harder to strengthen my connections with the Christians around me, even if there are some disagreements in tertiary doctrine.
