51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
Zombies seem to be the rage for the past several years. From top box office movies to award winning TV shows, even clothing and survival books there is no end to the undead madness. Personally, I’m not a fan of the whole craze, because it honestly doesn’t interest me. I prefer fantasy, sci-fi, comic book stories or anime, but eating people? Not my cup of tea. Yet, there are verses in the bible that suggest that the dead once rose and walked among us! I’m sure you’ve never heard your pastor teach on that one before, but look over the verse I placed above carefully and tell me if it doesn’t sound like dead saints (men and women who served God during their lives) came out of the grave and appeared before the living.
The Power Of The Resurrection
The first question that came to my mind about these verses were, “are they preaching the gospel to others, explaining how Christ rose them up to prove eternity exists?”. The other reason I thought of was that since this happened right after Christ rose from the dead, that same power from Holy Spirit flowed through the graves of the Earth and chose to resurrect these particular people. The power of the Resurrection of Christ certainly could have done it, and the fact that they went to testify about Him after He rose again leads me to believe this.
The interesting part was that they were compelled to show themselves to the living. For those who think that their bodies were not animated, the last verse (Matthew 27:53) says that they went into the city, particularly the holy city. Why didn’t they go to any other place? This brings me back to my original theory, which is that they went to prove to the people at that time that God existed. Who else could raise the dead? Wouldn’t you be freaking out and know for sure God is real if a dead saint showed up!
Why doesn’t God just resurrect someone today and let them explain that Heaven is real, hell is a place of eternal punishment and without Christ who forgave our sins we cannot enter the pearly gates? The rich man in the book of Luke asked the same question, and here was the response from Abraham who was awaiting Christs’ return.
27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one risen from the dead.’”
