Today, Yacht Club Games launched Plague of Shadows, the first DLC expansion to hit indie platformer, Shovel Knight.
Available as a free update to owners of the original game, Plague of Shadows features Plague Knight, a boss from the original game, in his very own story. Players on all platforms can experience a new story, new gameplay, and new surprises as they toss potions and navigate tricky environments in the familiar, nostalgic platforming gameplay.
While Plague of Shadows is normally only accessible after completing the main game, developer Yacht Club Games has released somes cheat codes that will allow players who have yet to finish the main game to experience the new content.
To unlock the new expansion without having to finish the main game, on the title screen, hold down the attack button and then while still holding it press Up, Up, Right, Down, Left, Left and release attack. This unlocks Plague of Shadows. However, it looks like players will need to create a new profile in the game to access the new campaign.
To unlock Plague Knight’s challenge mode, hold attack, press Up, Up, Left, Up, Up, Right, Up, Down, Up and release attack.
At Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) 2015 Nintendo revealed that Shovel Knight will be the first third-party game to receive an amiibo figure.
For the Wii U version of Shovel Knight, the amiibo will unlock an exclusive co-op mode, making it the only version of the game that supports two players for the entire campaign. On Wii U as well as 3DS, the amiibo will also unlock exclusive challenge modes not available on other platforms as well as customization options (changing the look and color of your Shovel Knight) that can be saved to the amiibo.
Beyond that, details from an earlier leak of the announcement were also confirmed — the figure will work with the Wii U and 3DS versions of Shovel Knight and all future games developed by Yacht Club on Nintendo platforms. Nintendo confirmed it will not currently work with first-party games, but the feature is under consideration.
Hopefully, this means that Nintendo may be considering Shovel Knight as an upcoming DLC fighter for Super Smash Brothers for Wii U and 3DS. Recently, Nintendo released a poll for fans to vote on characters that they would most like to see become future Smash Bros. DLC. The recent batch of fighters, Ryu of Street Fighter, Roy of Fire Emblem, and Lucas of Earthbound/Mother were not the result of this recent poll and voting is not set to close until October 3rd of this year. There is still a chance that Shovel Knight could become a fighter in the game if Yacht Club and Nintendo can reach an agreement to make it happen.
What do you think of the free DLC expansion to Shovel Knight? Does it add significant content to the already wildly popular game? Will you be purchasing the Shovel Knight amiibo? Let us know in the comments.
