Hardcore Henry: The Ultimate Fan Experience

Hardcore Henry is a the new film from STX entertainment that looks a bit more like a Duke Nukem Let’s Play than your conventional action movie. This is mostly because it is shot entirely in first-person to put you right in the action. It’s the first of it’s kind, and may just be the vanguard for a new type of action film.
Anyone who’s a fan of blockbuster First Person Shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield is going to feel right at home. The story follows a man who awakens in a Russian laboratory to find he is now a half-human, half-robot cyborg. Having no memory, he’s forced to trust the words of the first person he sees, a woman (Haley Bennet) who tells him his name is Henry and that she is his wife. Before she can activate his voice, she’s kidnapped by an evil psycho named Akan (Danila Kozlovsky) who is bent on destroying the world. What’s worse is he’s got an army of mercenaries standing between Henry and the presumable love of his life. This means Henry’s got to use his new abilities to shoot his way through an army, rescue the girl, save the world–and look cool doing it. The camera is Henry’s eyes, and everything that he does will be experienced in visceral fashion.
It looks to be an exciting affair in its own right, but there’s a way to take the experience to the next level. On April 7th, for one night only, select theaters around the country will be hosting Hardcore Henry: The Ultimate Fan Experience, presented by Fathom Events. In addition to getting to see the movie on Thursday night, the event will include a Q&A with star Sharlto Copley (District 9, Chappie) and director and writer Ilya Naishuller, with questions supplied by fans. Attendees will also receive a limited edition Hardcore Henry comic book. You can check out the list of participating theaters right here.
I’m definitely looking forward to this one. Even from just a cinematography standpoint, this is something that you just have to see how they pull off. It’s a bold experiment with high risk and potentially high reward. It’ll be very interesting to see how it pans out, and just how much it is going to affect action films going forward. I’ll let you know after the premiere, so stay tuned to GUG for our review.
