WWE Night of Champions 2014 Predictions

Welcome to another Geeks Under Grace predictions article. This month, we take a look at the upcoming WWE Night of Champions PPV. I am Thomas Martin, the unofficial head of the non-existent Wrestling section here at Geeks Under Grace. Today I am joined by Steve Schoen, Michael Pyatt Jr., and Josh Mors. All of us look at the business from different perspectives that I hope you can enjoy.

Unfortunately, the match of Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns has been cancelled due to Reigns needing (legitimate) emergency surgery.

NOC US

Sheamus (c) vs. Cesaro for the WWE United States Championship

Thomas

I WANT to care about this match, but I just don’t. I forgot that there even was still a United States Championship. If the US title could be utilized for anything right now, it would be in a Rusev feud. Otherwise, I see no purpose to having the title around anymore. I feel like Sheamus will be the next opponent for Rusev after Mark Henry. I am predicting the outcome of this match on circumstances that are not based on this match at all.

Winner and STILL WWE United States Champion – Sheamus

Steve

They’ve been setting Cesaro up for some sort of title run for a while now. Cesaro has tremendous strength & athleticism, and could carry a title well. However, it is only right that he start at the bottom of the title hierarchy and earn his stripes. For his part, Sheamus has slid down to mid-card status, and I’ve seen no real signs that this is going to change soon. Sheamus is incredibly strong and loves to fight, but Cesaro has shown us that he has the strength to match him. Subsequently, I will not count out the possibility of Rob Van Dam interfering in the match in some way, as he is not scheduled to appear, unless he’s slated to be in a pre-show match. However, I still believe Cesaro will win the day.

Winner and NEW WWE United States Champion – Cesaro

Josh

I’ve never been a fan of Cesaro when it came to his matches, and I would always root against him and that tradition of mine is going to stay. I’m going for Sheamus on this one. Let’s hope he defends the United States Champion

Winner and STILL WWE United States Champion – Sheamus

Michael

This should be a decent match. It seems that WWE didn’t give this match that much heat. So I won’t give it too much thought.

Winner and STILL WWE United States Champion – Sheamus

NOC IC

Dolph Ziggler (c) vs. The Miz for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

Thomas

Until I sat down to write these predictions, I forgot which one of these men was the Intercontinental Champion. That said, I do like the stunt doubles involved in this feud. I could totally see R-Ziggler and D-Ziggler pulling some “twin magic” to win this one. You can’t even tell them apart!

Winner and STILL WWE Intercontinental Champion – R-Ziggler!… I mean, Dolph Ziggler (I always confuse those two)

Steve

This has been one of the more interesting feuds in recent history. With the addition of stunt-doubles for both superstars, God (and the bookers) only knows what’s going to happen during this match. I’ve always been a fan of Sandow’s ever-growing list of characters, and having him become The Miz’s stunt double was a perfect fit. I can see Miz sending Mizdow into the ring for a pin. Then when the ref realizes he’s been duped and goes to restart the match, Miz will try to run away with the belt, only to be stopped by R-Ziggler. Miz will get tossed back into the ring just in time for the ref to ring the bell and catch a Fame-Asser from Ziggler.

Winner and STILL WWE Intercontinental Champion – Dolph Ziggler

Josh

Looks like these two are going after it yet again. Last time I believe The Miz had the Intercontinental  Champion but he lost it. These two I’ve never really liked at all because Ziggler is just a showoff while Miz is really cocky. If I had to choose on this one it would be that The Miz gets his title back.

Winner and NEW WWE Intercontinental Champion – The Miz

Michael

One thing is for sure, this will be a good match. Hopefully, they give them some time to go at it. We deserve to see them go. I liked this feud more than I should have. The addition of R-Truth R-Ziggler is over the top hilariousness. Hopefully, The Miz gets the win at the PPV, then gets a rematch win on a later RAW so that both wrestlers can move on.

Winner and NEW WWE Intercontinental Champion – The Miz

NOC RKO Y2J

Chris Jericho vs. Randy Orton

Thomas

Randy needs a win here in order to get back on track. If I recall correctly, he has lost every PPV match since Wrestlemania. Jericho is likely getting ready to leave the company again. This one is a no-brainer for me. Still, it should be a decent match.

Winner – Randy Orton

Steve

With a big Fozzy tour already underway, I have a hard time believing that Jericho is going to continue working a full program much longer. There hasn’t even been that much of a buildup in feud between these two, and this match seems to be a result of there being no other logical competitors for either of these two top guys to face. It is entirely possible that Orton and Reigns aren’t completely finished with each other, as they are both still very much in the title hunt. So, this match is more of an aside than a fleshed-out story. That being said, I believe Kane will become involved, and attempt to do to Jericho the same thing they did to Dean Ambrose. I believe they will succeed, as Jericho will need a legitimate kayfabe injury to keep him out of action so that he can go tour with his band.

Winner – Randy Orton

Josh

I’m rooting for Chris Jericho on this one. Due to the fact, that I have never really liked Orton. He just seems like this cocky individual and I don’t really like cocky players.   Hopefully Y2J will win this one.

Winner – Chris Jericho

Michael

This feud has come along pretty fast. I honestly don’t know why they even have this program going. I guess since it is two big names, you might get a little more views. Anyway, I think Orton goes over. He’s the full-timer and he’s with the Authority. I don’t see a reason for Jericho to come away with the win.

Winner – Randy Orton

NOC TAG

The Usos (c) vs. Goldust and Stardust for the WWE Tag Team Championship

Thomas

Cody Rhodes has changed his entire moveset and mannerisms to fit his new character. Someone get this man a trophy! Goldust is in the run of his career this past year, too. The Usos always put on a great match. With all of that combined, I expect this to be one of the best matches of the night. It’s hard to predict who will get the win here, so I will just continue my trend of predicting the end of the Usos’ reign.

Winners and NEW WWE Tag Team Champions – The Dust Busters!

Steve

The WWE tag team division has been in a rather sorry state for the longest time. Lacking a good roster of legitimate tag teams (Rybaxel doesn’t count), the tag titles haven’t meant much since the last time D-Generation X held the titles back in 2009, and the WWE began creating tag teams out of seemingly random pairs of superstars, hoping to find something that clicked. Love them or hate them, the WWE was fortunate to gain a natural, believable tag team in Jimmy & Jey Uso. From the esteemed Anoa’i family, the sons of Rikishi have carried on their father’s legacy well. However, now we have another pair of brothers with an even more famous father in the legendary Dusty Rhodes. One is a seasoned veteran, and one of the few Attitude Era superstars still working a full program. The other is an athletic young student of wrestling, and hit a home run when he became Stardust. The Usos can be proud of their title reign, and surely will be champions again one day, but I’m afraid the time of The Golden Rhodes is here.

Winners and NEW WWE Tag Team Champions – The Golden Rhodes (Goldust & Stardust)

Josh

For this match, I would like Gold and Stardust to win because the other duo to me doesn’t really deserve to be the tag team champions.  Plus these two brothers work pretty well together and I hope to see them do well.

Winners and NEW WWE Tag Team Champions – Gold and Stardust

Michael

I love Stardust. I honestly think if they play this right, he could actually become a good draw. Step one of that is to give the tag titles to he and Goldust. I like the Usos; don’t have many problems with them. They had a nice run with the title, and I think it’s time to give it back to the Rhodes Brothers.

Winners and NEW WWE Tag Team Champions – Gold & Stardust

NOC Murica

Mark Henry vs. Rusev

Thomas

‘Murica! This was actually the feud that was highlighted at the end of this past week’s Raw. Were it not for that, I’d say Rusev wins easy in this one. However, “Team USA” has lost a couple of times to Rusev now and it may be time for Rusev to get his first clean loss.

In all honesty, I don’t see that happening. If Cena loses to Brock again, he will need someone to beat to build himself back up. What better way than fighting for America? Also, Sheamus has the US Championship and I could see Rusev setting his sights on that next. Two possible opponents already in wait for Rusev. No way he loses to Mark Henry here.

Winner – Rusev

Steve

Rusev has been steamrolling the competition at Pay-Per-View events ever since he arrived on the scene. His anti-America angle is one that has been done before, but current world events make that a non-issue for the majority of people. However, I believe it has finally run its course. I cannot fathom Rusev going over on a guy who has devastatingly crushed superstars like Big Show and Sheamus in past matches. Additionally, I doubt the wounds of Summerslam, both literal and figurative, have healed for Jack Swagger. Having no match at the event himself, I predict he and Zeb will show up and at the very least prevent Lana from using any underhanded tactics, like she used during the arm-wrestling match. I’m sure Zeb would like to seek some retribution for the cheap shot Rusev laid on him at SummerSlam.

Winner – Mark Henry

Josh

I saw the whole deal with Jack Swagger and Rusev on Raw one of times and Rusev’s manager was being really rude because she was insulting us Americans.  I vote for Mark Henry on this one.

Winner – Mark Henry

Michael

Please, oh please can we move on from every Rusev match being a show of country pride. I get it, USA vs Russia is a decent program to run. It helped give Swagger a little life, but please, let this be the last match of country pride being the focus… No chance Mark Henry wins this match.

Winner – Rusev

NOC Diva

Paige (c) vs. AJ Lee vs. Nikki Bella in a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Divas Championship

Thomas

My two favorite Divas!… and… Ms. “I wish you had died in the womb”. I fully expect Brie Bella to get involved and I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets added last minute to the match. However, I much prefer to see the title kept off of the Bellas. For no other reason than to keep up the feud of AJ and Paige, I’m going with the champ to retain in this one.

Winner and STILL WWE Divas Champion – Paige

Steve

AJ & Paige have been getting on each other’s nerves for some time now. They’re the only two divas who have enough of a pop to warrant carrying the title. A long-lasting feud in which they fight over the Diva’s title, having it change hands occasionally, would be rather refreshing. Nikki’s insertion into this match is more or less a plot device to fuel her feud with her sister, who will likely interfere and cost Nikki a pinfall or two. This time around, I see Paige maintaining the title, and her feud with AJ will continue for the foreseeable future.

Winner and STILL WWE Divas Champion – Paige

Josh

I’m going to be rooting for AJ Lee on this one to become the Divas champion. She is the only Diva that I really like in WWE. All the others, I don’t really like. So I hope she wins the triple threat match and becomes Diva champion!

Winner and NEW WWE Divas Champion – AJ Lee

Michael

Expect to see some involvement from Brie Bella in this match. I think her involvement will somehow backfire and cause Nikki to win the match. This was another program that seemed rush, and I have no idea what the heck will happen after this match. Usually, that would be a good thing. This time however, it isn’t.

Winner and NEW WWE Divas Champion – Nikki Bella

NOC WWE WHC

Brock Lesnar (c) vs. John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Thomas

One of three scenarios will happen here:

  1. Brock will establish further dominance by beating Cena yet again (clean or otherwise).
  2. Cena will “overcome the odds” and SuperCena his way to a surprise victory over Lesnar. This could possibly be followed up with Seth Rollins cashing in Money in the Bank on Cena.
  3. Cena will side with Heyman and become a heel for the first time in a decade. We did see John Cena’s “ruthless aggression” face on Raw when he had to be physically separated from Lesnar this past Monday night. It’s a rare occurrence that Cena shows an expression other than cheeky, pained, or “Champ is here!”. Was it a sign of things to come?

The small possibility of Number 3 happening is what keeps me intrigued with this match, but I know it will be what is behind door Number 1.

Winner and STILL WWE World Heavyweight Champion – Brock Lesnar

Steve

If Cena’s two Wrestlemanias against The Rock have taught us anything, it’s that Cena knows how to win rematches. He learns from his mistakes, and digs a little bit deeper. However, this rematch is not like any rematch he’s had. The IWC has been tossing around the idea of a Cena heel-turn for some time, and recent events have at least teased at such an occurrence. Cena has stated that he’s not going to Night of Champions to beat Brock Lesnar, but to tan Lesnar’s hide. In their latest confrontation, Heyman even uttered the phrase “Paul Heyman guy,” in reference to Cena. After nearly being pushed over the edge in his feud with Bray Wyatt, I find it inconceivable that John Cena will be able to resist unleashing the monster within during his rematch with Brock Lesnar. I predict John Cena will finally shed the ideals of hustle, loyalty, & respect and replace it with “might makes right.” Cena will struggle against Lesnar until Brock laughs at him one too many times, and John finally loses his grip. He will give Lesnar a beating, the likes of which he’s never experienced, but his overzealousness will cost him the match.

Winner and STILL WWE World Heavyweight Champion – Brock Lesnar

Josh

It looks like these two are going at it again. I rooted last time for John Cena to defend his title but that didn’t go too well for him.  I’m still sticking with John this time, and let’s just hope that he wins this match.

Winner and NEW WWE World Heavyweight Champion – John Cena

Michael

I know people don’t like Lesnar because he isn’t full-time, but the dude is a beast. I think he should hold the title until WrestleMania and then he drops it to somebody there. It would be nice to get Cena out of the title picture again. Let him feud with something else for a while and bring him back after ‘Mania like they did last year. Obviously, the star of this feud has been Paul Heyman. He never ceases to amaze me.

Winner and STILL WWE World Heavyweight Champion – Brock Lesnar

So there you have it! It looks like the only thing the four of us could agree on is that the Tag Team Championship will likely be changing hands at the PPV. What are your thoughts? Share below in the comments or on our Facebook page.
